| I hope I'm not sounding too much like a newbie, but I was wondering why prices of 1911 style pistols are always so much higher than other pistols? They usually seem to be at least $400-$500 more. |

Might be beause John Browning invented something that has become the most copied model in history.
Everyone has tinkered with the concept until each thinks they have improved upon it, then the marketing begins.
Supply and demand is also a factor.
Then there are those who like plastic pistols.

yea I agree with Bears, I think the polymer pistols are just less cost to produce, so they cost less
if you compare a typical 1911 to a Sig / HK (non polymer) the prices are closer to the same _________________ Those who adapt control the future

I have seen custom 1911s for 3000 plus, and glocks for under 500 and I have seen polymer h&k specialty models for 2k and off brand 1911s for less than 600.
Honestly, I think its a lot of brand recognition. Plus the 1911 has been in active service for 100 years (almost) and it probly has sentimental value to some folks... my grandpas grandpa said its all hell ever own...etc...
I honestly read a lot about my taurus before I bought it, not due to an issue with taurus, biut skepticism towards a fully loaded 1911 under 800.00 today. I am happy with it (a few personal customizations later) and if you read some of my earlier threads when I first joined this site, I am the LAST person to own a 1911, and I still don't think that they're all that fancy or anything special technologically.. But honestly, after having one and doing all the add ons myself, I see now that it is probably one of the most simple and reliable semi-autos ever made. I am 99.99% when I pull the trigger it will fire. My desert eagle I had, eeehhh I gave it 75%.
Btw if the whole "Taurus has a bad rep" thong bugs you, Rock Island makes a REALLY nice 1911, they are less than 700 fully loaded, AND they have a hi cap double stack magazine model. The custom green (Yes Bubba I said green) model at my local gunshop was the priciest one I've seen, and Hi-cap fully loaded and customized by the gunsmith on site, it was 750.00. _________________ Why is it when a gun accident happens its the fault of the gun, and ammunition manufacturers and wholesalers, but when a drunk driver kills a family of 4 nobody goes after budweiser? Or chevy, ford or whatevr they were driving.

You know since you asked, and I was thinking of it, I was just fiddling around with mine, and actually I think 1911s are like Harley Davidsons. It seems like once you own one, EVERYONE who owns one is your new friend. They're kinda funny. Its like having a hot rod or a custom bike. You don't HAVE to do anything to them, they work just fine mil-spec, but you CAN do so much to them that once you start, its almost addicting.
On mine, I have changed hammers, got rid of the ambi-safety and replaced it with a slim profile right hand only, a slim profile slide catch, higher psi recoil spring, aftermarket grips, and I recently found a used Colt 10 rd mag (which fits and feeds just lovely) and all that plus the base price I am still under 950.
I have NEVER owned a handgun that I invested so much time and effort into. And just like a modified Harley, mine is MINE. The basic weapon is a run of the mill gun, but mine is unique.
And honestly if I had NEVER done anything to it, it would still be a really nice weapon.

| I just got the newest Taurus catalog in the mail yesterday actually, and I was looking through it. I knew Taurus made a 1911, but I didn't know they had so many variations. I do think they're a slick looking gun, and like you were saying, everybody who owns one LOVES it. I do think it's a down the road kind of purchase for sure. |

Yeah its a good gun. I have a taurs catalog too and since I have a 1911 already, I was checking out a nice little .44 mag revolver, I think it is the tracker series, it reminds me of the ruger alaskan. | Does anyone know anything about the Para 1911? I've seen that one advertised for around $500. On the one hand, it's good for someone that wants a 1911 but doesn't have a ton of money, but on the other hand, is there a reason it's priced so cheap? |

I have owned 2 Para's, my ONLY complaint was the bluing seemed thin. Look at the RIA tactical, if you can find one at around $425.00 depending on extras, you can't go wrong.
These pistols can't be beat!!!
I have two (two tones) on order and after firing one I was sold!!

Agreed! Although Para has several features (double stacks, LDA triggers, etc.) I think they are a bit on the pricey side.
