I am still attempting to learn more about ammo.

I've been a fan of guns, from a young age. But I've never learned as much as I could about ammo along the way. So I'm attempting to make up for that these days.

When a friend offered to sell me his 'old ammo collection' I jumped at the offer. He's worked at gunshops for many years and he's an avid shooter / reloader so I figured his collection would be cool

I was right, I have barely dug into t so far but I thought I'd post some pictures. I have some questions and it looks cool to me so here they are see what you think.

After pulling it all out of the box and sorting the shotgun shells from the brass ammo
Once organized it's a fine start to an ammo collection

The sorted shotgun shells,
the box in back is full unopened and has a label "Now In Plastic"

An organized shot of the various odd shells

Here's what happens when you pay too much attention to bullets

Shocked

Never seen that in my life...

Good luck deciphering the heiroglyphics there. Wink

I've got some cool examples of shotgun shells / slugs. I know theres been some talk about them, so I'll get a picture session going soon

I'm thinking about cleaning the shelss with brass-o and rag oreven throwing them in the tumbler.

How danerous do you think it is to tumble live rounds?

I might invest in a gravity hammer now and pull these all apart for safety, what do you think of that? (I'd but the round back together after)

I had a collection (now lost) when I was a kid, so this is a new start for me. I have a few extras if anyone else has a collectiona nd would like to "horse trade"

Lets see pics of your collections

How odd you should mention that, I have a story...

Remember this .40 round?

Well, this is a live round, bad reload, and it went through an entire wash cycle in the cargo pocket of my BDUs because I had forgotten about it. It did not blow up and it is still intact, FWIW.

I don't know, maybe.

I don't have a bullet puller to take it apart and check, and I don't know about pliers...

well just shake it, I would think tf the powder got wet it would clump up and just stick to the side (no sound) or shake in one big clump

If it sounds / feels like a salt shaker then I'd guess it's still dry

Warning: Check all local laws before attempting to shake a round of ammo however Shocked

I shake the bullet, I hear no sound.

I think the powder is much too compacted to be heard in this bullet.

BYW Bubba.

Excellent Collection.
I don't know what you paid for it but you made a heck of a deal.

I wouldn't even try to sort my collection, these days.
Actually, I don't think there are more than 30# worth.
Only a couple of them are shot shells.
Most of mine are just old. Wink A Bear

I don't dare post the price I paid (people would get pissed), it was a friend and he knows I'll be putting it to good use.

I plan to clean them up record what they all are in a list, and store them in the plastic things that come in a box of ammo

Anyone have ideas for how to store / display a collection?

And here's those other questions again..

I'm thinking about cleaning the shelss with brass-o and rag oreven throwing them in the tumbler.

How danerous do you think it is to tumble live rounds?

I might invest in a gravity hammer now and pull these all apart for safety, what do you think of that? (I'd but the round back together after)

I have tumbled loaded .45 rounds before with no ill effects. It was in a true tumbler type polisher. I think the vibrator type would be safer. I don't think it was the wisest thing I ever did .........but as I look back at my checkered past I don't recall any ever accusing me of being wise.

Taking them apart and putting them back together is a waste of time.

The only way they will ever be dangerous is if they are subjected to
a fire.

The best display I ever saw was behind glass. The gentleman built a
shadow box type display, narrow shelves, with a glass front.
Each round had a very fine copper wire that went through the back board
of the display and twist tied at the back.

On the face of the shelf was a tag with the name and caliber of each round.

I was impressed, it was allways my intention to build one exactly like that.
Never got around to it. Wink A Bear

OK, if anyone is interested I think I found a good way to keep my growing ammo collection

As you can prolly tell, I like to take pictures of stuff, so I decided not to mount them all on a board or anything that permanent

So I found an old parts caddy that I bought for a $1 a few years back, knowing I'd find a good use for it eventually

So here's how I keep my ammo collection now

It folds up into this easy to carry box

As the box opens / unfolds

Wider shot of it unfolding

Here it is open all the way

Close ups of the 4 sections

As you can see I still have plenty of room for it to grow too
(except the shotgun shells which take up a lot of room)

The white stuff is old stickers that have fallen off. I'll take some remover to it and it should be back to all grey again

Oh, BTW the 7.62x39 (AK47 ammo) collection is larger than the rest of it so it lives in a whole other type of box
(a cool ammo crate that is the type the US sends it's troops overseas for their training AK47 ammo)
